Outdoor education classes

High/Low Ropes Course:
There are six low elements which will help build teamwork and communication. To get the most out of the ropes course, it is suggested that campers complete the low course first, helping with positive encouragement during the high course elements. There are three high elements designed to challenge campers: high logs, monkey vines, and a zip line. It is preferred that campers attempt the high log or monkey vines first before the zip line. Blue Mountain Ranch has all the necessary ropes, equipment, and harnesses required. Our staff is available to facilitate the ropes course.

Rappelling:
Blue Mountain Ranch contains a small rock wall at the campsite. This rock is perfect for teaching campers the basics of rappelling down a rock face. Rappelling at BMR will help students get the exposure to an activity they otherwise would not have the opportunity to try. Blue Mountain Ranch has all the necessary ropes, equipment, and harnesses required. Our staff is available to teach rappelling.

Gold Panning:
Campers will see how the 49'ers discovered gold in the stream that runs through camp in addition to learning about the history of Colorado's gold mining.

Who Lives in the Forest:
Campers will explore the ponderosa pine ecosystem while searching for signs of animal life including scat, tracks, nests, burrows, feathers, and more. Additionally, they will learn about the survival strategies and interactions of the forest plants and animals.

Forest Management:
Blue Mountain Ranch has recently completed a huge fire mitigation project on on one of their properties. This is the perfect area for campers to learn about how to identify forest health, hazardous forest fire fuels, enhancement of wildlife habitat and the enhancement of recreation and aesthetics.

Rocky Mountain Geology:
Campers will unearth the geologic stories of Pikes Peak, the Cripple Creek gold rush, the Florissant Fossil Beds, and Colorado's watershed while collecting rock and mineral samples on the camp trails. Along the way, they will find puzzle pieces that reveal the answers to questions about Colorado Geology. Blue Mountain Ranch has its very own Quartz bed and is hiking distance to an old copper mine.
Hiking in the Pike National Forest:
Blue Mountain Ranch is surrounded by the nation forest on three sides with many trails for campers to hike. With two camp outposts, the hiking never stops.
Outdoor Recreation:
Blue Mountain Ranch will provide all equipment for the following activities: canoeing, tennis, fishing, gym activities, outdoor games, etc. Feel free to bring additional items and equipment, if needed.
Creative Writing in the Outdoors:
For this activity, campers will hike to a location of their choosing. Once there, they will be given a writing assignment. They could be asked to write about plants or animals they see, an experience they have had in the wilderness, the clouds or any other nature related topic. Once the topic is given, campers can spread out, within sight of staff, to complete their writing. Sometimes the writings will be shared or they can also be considered a personal reflection of their time in the outdoors.
